Things I dread...

...Sharks. Thanks Brock. This was never a worry of mine until your little phobia came to light in Croatia. Him and the movie 'The Beach' gave me the fear that everytime I step into the ocean, a shark is going to bite my leg off. Thanks Brock. Thanks Leo!

...Heat. I have talked to many people that have been to SE Asia, and everyone tells me how dreadfully hot it is there. Awesome (sarcasm). I am really not a 'heat' guy. I am a 20 degree guy. But apparently, its about 40 degrees everyday, and the humitidy is sweltering. So sweltering that you walk outside and immediatly have a good sweat going. So sweltering that I am going to think that I should put deoderant on my balls. I dread the thought of that without an ocean beside me.
...Theft. I am pretty certain that something is going to be stolen on this trip, and what makes it better is that this is the most high-tech trip I have taken. I am taking a netbook with me, along with an awesome camera, and an iPod touch. Something is going to go missing, but its all really ok. Theft isn't bad...everything can be replaced. I am all about safety, and as long as Michele and I are safe, that is all that counts. Just keep your hands off of my fucking stuff!

...Spiders. I don't even know if there are bad ones in Thailand...They just creep me the hell out.

...Earthquakes. aka Tsunami's. This is just from watching too many shitty videos from the 2004 tsunami on Youtube. I'd like to think i am smart enough to RUN if anyhting happens...But really, anyone that knows me knows that I would probably sit on the beach saying 'look! a big wave!'. Ahh, really there is no need to worry about stuff like this, but who knows!

...Coming home. I love travelling so much, that I am already dreading coming home. If I don't come home, please don't be mad, mom and dad. You can come visit me anytime!

-------------------

Well, we are down to about 36 hrs before I leave. Stuff has been purchased, things are packed,
and I am mentally ready for this. Except the heat. I still hate the heat. goddamit!

Peace

Stereotyping Nationalities

ok, so I am officially running out of things to write about before I actually step foot on a plane, but that is still 5 days away....and DAMN, that feels like forever away...

So I thought I would do a little sterotyping...

Anyone that knows me knows I have done a little bit of travelling in my life. This trip will be my 4th continent, and by the end of it, I will have been to 26 countries. I have maintained throughout my travels that what I see and do is secondary to the people I meet. Some of the best people i have ever met was on the road, and the shame of it is that you only have a day or 2 with most of them before they move on to their next destination. Its the good ones that you keep as long term friends.

I have been lucky to meet and keep some really good people as friends. There is Lulu and Zoe in England, Bing in Boston, Emily in Minny, David in Fla, David in Leeds, The Irish girls I met in Rio, Laurie and Vicky from England...the list goes on and on and on....

Anyways, throughout these travels, I have built my case on stereotyping a few nationalities....

American: Both the best and worst travellers I have ever met. As I mentioned, I met some people that I still keep in touch with from the US. I have also met some fags that were your prototypical ignorant Americans. I actually had a guy say to me in Prague 'What do I care if people hate me! I am american, and we run the world'. Great Attitude, douchebag.

But I never want to say bad things about Americans. Bing, David and Emily are 3 of the finest people I have met while travelling!

Aussies: Once again, its split into two here, but not the same as Americans. The women from Australia are always Supercool. I have hung out with and partied with MANY of them, and I have never had a bad experience. The men, though, are complete tools. It seems everyone of them has that 'meathead' mentality...The 'I am better than you' outlook. I have no time for that, nor care for them.

English: I seriously love English people....Partied with them all over the world, and they are great travellers. The men, the women, doesn't matter. None of them are afraid to have a pint, or to find new location to explore. Its also funny to see them try to throw a football! Limey bastards only know how to use their feet. I guess the one downside I have is the Scots are impossible to understand. I need a goddamned translator to figure out what they are saying.

Canadians: What can I say....we travel, and travel well. We like to drink, we like to party, and we get along with everyone. The one downside is when you get mistaken for Americans.

Well, anyways, I am just filling in some time to kill, and topics to write before I leave. 5 more days of these shitty topics, folks. Not much longer until you get to hear all about places like Koh Phi Phi. April 2rd, and I will be basking in the sun!

Peace out!

Theme Song?

Michele keeps telling me that I have to pick a theme song for this trip....Here is the best I have come up with so far:

(*Please add a comment with other suggestions on 'Theme songs' or music that should be on an iPod for a trip like this!*)

Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok

[THE AMERICAN]
Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner
Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change -- don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue
It's Iceland -- or the Philippines --
or Hastings -- or --or this place!

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

[THE AMERICAN]
One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother

[COMPANY]
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city

[THE AMERICAN]
Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town --

[COMPANY]
Tea, girls, warm, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite

[THE AMERICAN]
Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

[THE AMERICAN]
Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha
And thank God I'm only watching the game -- controlling it --
I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you
So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massageparlours --

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

Map.

Just wanted to add a small map of the south islands to give a little visual of where we are going. We are landing in Phuket on the afternoon of the 1st, then heading to Koh Phi Phi on the 2nd. You can see all of these places on here.

After Phi Phi, I think it will be off to Krabi, then up to Koh Pha Nang.

But who knows....plans can change fast as Calgary weather.

The Plan

Getting so close now, that I can smell it.

I am having a tough time thinking of things to write about while I am still here in Canada, so I thought I would go into a little detail about what the plan is.

We land in Bangkok at 12:30am on April 1st...good time to land. I am sure that getting out VISA's at 1am is just going to be a blast! We have a flight out the next afternoon to head down to Phuket....so our first day in Asia will basically be spent in transit.

Michele and I both have the same thoughts, when it comes to Phuket. It's going to be paradise, and we know that, but we want to try to get out of the city atmosphere, and to the islands as quick as possible, so I think we are going to book it to Koh Phi Phi asap, and just crash there for a couple days...then up to Koh Phangang for April 6th or 7th.

Koh Phangang will be home base for a couple days. Full Moon party is on April 9th, and we fly out of Koh Samui on the 13th, so I think there will be a lot of relaxing, and a few day trips. We want to try snorkling in Koh Tao, and I want to go deep sea fishing. There is a Natl. Park on the mainland where we would like to do a hike...I hope that can be done on a day trip, but not sure...

On the 13th we fly to Chaing Mai, which is in northern thialand. We happen to be there during the Thai new year, which is called Songkran....Apparently its a big party, and known as the worlds biggest water fight. Everyone walks around soaking everyone with water.

We are also meeting a guy there named Dave that I travelled with years ago in Croatia. I haven't seen him for 4 years, so we have a lot of time to catch up on. My guess is that we can take care of that in 3 days worth of beer.

After that, we really are not sure what we are doing....I think heading back to Bangkok, and into Cambodia, then on to Vietnam, and end the trip off with Laos....

That is 6 weeks worth of travelling, right there....I am starting to think its not going to be enough time. I already feel like I am 'skimming' over the islands, and could spend an entire 6 weeks there.

....maybe I should just move there....

Anyways...I should tell a little bit about Michele, my travel companion. Hmm, what to say about her. We have been friends for about 4 years now, and when this trip came up, she was in like a dirty shirt. She is 24 years old (She'll be 25 by the time we leave), and a paramedic in the beautiful metro area of Innisfail. She is an experienced traveller, having been to Austrailia and Africa in the past. I couldn't have asked for a more laid back, easy going, easy to hang out with person to go travelling with.

She has access to post here, so maybe some day she will drop some wisdom on your asses!

Ok, so only one more week to go. I will try to do another post or 2 before we leave. I am sure this week is just going to DRRRAAAAGGGGG for me!

Until next time....

My Thought Process...

A few weeks before I head out on a trip, my mind starts going nuts. I start thinking a lot. A LOT!

Good things, bad things, all things.

So I have noticed a pattern with my thoughts....some phases of thought.

First Phase: Adventure. Where am I going? what am I going to see? What crazy things am I going to do. All good things, all fun things, and this trip has been no different. I spend the few quiet evenings I have on the internet researching, and looking up my destinations. Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Samui, Chiang Mai, Plain of Jars, Angkor Wat, Killing Fields, etc. Just amazing places I have to go, and amazing things I have to see. It gets me really excited to be heading out soon.

Second Phase: The differences. This is an interesting line of though. What I mean by the differences is....the small things. Sitting at an internet cafe, and the keyboard being different, or the toilets....I think about things like the bugs...how big are they going to be? How strong of bug spray do I need? I think about the language....Am I going to be able to communicate with people? I think about accomodations...Are they going to be safe? All of this stuff. Eventually, because of all the 'thinking' i do about these small things, it leads me to the third phase...

Third Phase: Worry. I start wondering 'why I am going on this trip?', and 'Should I REALLY be taking this big digital camera with me???'. It really just propogates into a full blown nervousness. it makes my stomach turn, and my palms sweat. It's not a good feeling to have just a few days before leaving.

Here is the neat part...its completely cyclical for me. To get rid of the worry, I just start back at phase 1. It puts a smile on my face, and the worries subside. I am an easy person to please, so all I have to do is start reading about the people in Laos, again.

Anyways, it's a small look into how my head works. Not all is blissful when travelling. Just most of it. :D

So to end off, I want to ask the readers for a little help. write a comment and tell me (from your experience) where we should go, and what we should see to make this trip the best one ever.

One last point: I added a stat counter on Friday, and since then, this page has had 95 unique visitors. That is insane considering I don't even leave for another week and a half. Please keep reading, and please give me some feeback on the content. I like reading the comments as much as I like writting this.

So...Just thinkin'...

More planning, more studying, more looking into things. I am starting to think there are too many things to see and too little time. Always seems to be a common problem when travelling, so like usual, I will make due.

Flights have been booked to get us from Bangkok on April 1st to Phuket. We also have flights booked to get us from Samui to Chiang Mai on April 13th. So there you have it...we basically have 12 days for the islands. Talking to Michele about it, we really want to get away from Phuket asap (even though it has been described as paradise!), and head off to some islands. Ko Yao and Koh Phi Phi are both east of Phuket in the indian Ocean. Just looking up some info on these places, it looks pretty goddamned spectacular...See the picture to the left. That is Ko Yao.

I started reading up on Koh Phi Phi as well...for those of you who are un-aware, it is where the Beach was filmed in 2000. Once again, spectacular views, and we plan on spending a couple nights there. I am really looking forward to just paying some random dude $5 CAD to take us to some random, hidden beach, on some random, hidden island.

So I am offically in the Thai frame of mind, even though I have 18 days until I leave Canadian soil.

Here is what I want some help with...What kind of things do you want me to tell you about on this daily write up? Would you like me to tell you about some strange observations on the places
we are in? would you like to hear some difference from 'back home'? Would you like to know about my daily infatuation (it happens when I am travelling...1 ding per day, minimum)? I would love to do this, and post a pic of the lovely ladies...I am going to try, anyways, but there is a fine balance between 'nice guy' and 'creepy guy with a camera'.

Anyways, I think I might just be writting to myself, but I am getting used to this idea of writting down my thoughts. Its a kinda cool thing to do.

So what I would like to ask you is...What do you want to hear about? what pics do you want to see?

18 more days....And counting....

Lets get this show on the road...

Ok...The birthday is over. Now I am ready to jet off.

We leave in 20 days. Flying out of Calgary on March 30, on a 30 hr voyage to Bankok. That flight is going to be pure hell, and I expect to be tired, stinky, and grumpy by the time we land in bangkok.

The good news is that we aren't there for long. Just enough time to sleep, and then we are up and outta there to go to Phuket. Afterall, we might as well start with some tropical beaches, seeing its -30 today in Calgary as I write this.

So I am not much of a beach guy. But for the first time in my life, I am pretty excited to just chill out for a while on the sandy beaches. I am also not a heat guy. I am NOT looking forward to the sweltering 40-degree heat that we have in store for us. As long as I have an Ocean at my disposal, I think I will be fine. Its when we get into places like Laos that I am going to melt out of my skin.

Anyways...I am going to update this. Even before I leave. I am kinda getting the hang of this 'writting for myself' thing, and if others want to read along with me, knock yourself out. Comments and tips are appreciated.

20 more days....
